Welcome to this website!
This site is an extensive, publicly accessible and German-language database on the theme of child labour. We’ve spent several thousand hours investigating child labour, compiling information, summarizing it up, and then organizing it all. Though we try to keep the information as current as possible, some details may have changed. Therefore, we strive for information transparency, and, when possible, always list our sources so that you can access the most current information.
And we’ll be updating, building, and expanding this site, insamuch as our capacity allows. If you have any concerns, we’d like to hear from you—look at our Contact Information!
Best Wishes,
Your EarthLink-Team
218 million children under the age of 15 work. Of those, 126 million work under explotative conditions. 73 million are younger than 10 years old. The United Nation's International Labor Organization published these shocking figures in 2006.
The goal of the campaign „Active Against Child Labour“ is to inform the German public, especially those who are politically, economically, and socially involved. We want to tell these individuals about ways to overcome this inhumane practice of exploiting children to make our everday products. On the campaign’s list are over 130 German cities, communities, and counties and six states which have decided to no longer acquire any products made from explotative child labour. In our List of Firms we show how the labour standards of well-known firms, responsible for the products in our everyday life, measure up, so that you can buy in accordance with your beliefs about fairness.
The campaign is backed by national and international human rights groups, worldwide firms, local agendas, offices, and church groups.
Like everyone else who works to advocate human rights, we know we can’t eradicate this phenomenon of child labour tomorrow. With all the political, national and international organisations, as well as a large part of the economy joining us in the effort, we all know that the worst forms of child labour—termed “explotative child labour„—must be condemned as quickly as possible and then abolished. This concerns a violation of basic human rights. It’s also clear that ending child labour will only be possible when families are offered economical alternatives to their products.
EarthLink also backs similiar concrete projects for ecologically and socially sound development.
Our campaign work in Germany is a part of the worldwide fight against exploitative child labour.
